MODALS
“Modal”, “mod” dan gelir. Mod, “kip” anlamına gelir. Dolayısıyla Modal, “Kiplik” demektir. Modal’lar yardımcı fiil sisteminden yararlanan ama farklı fonksiyona sahip ünitelerdir.
I don’t speak. (Konuşmam.)

I can speak. (Konuşabilirim.)

Görüldüğü gibi yardımcı fiiller, anlamlarını yükleme katmazlar. Ama Modal’lar anlamlarını yükleme katarlar.

Can: …e bilmek: güç, yetenek
ir May:. ..ebilmek: olası, tahmin
Be able to: ..e bilmek: Can’ e eşittir.

Must: …meli, …malı: Must’ta zorunluluk söyleyenden kaynaklanır,
-meli, -malı Have to: zorunda olmak. Zorunluluk var: Have to’da ise dışardan kaynaklanır.
Should: gerekir. Her ikisi de “tavsiye öneri” anlamında kullanılır. İkisinin arasında
Ought to: gerekir. çok az bir nüans farkı vardır, aynı anlamda kullanılabilirler. (Devamini Okuyun…)
