THE PAST CONTINUOUS TENSE
SÜREKLİ GEÇMiŞ ZAMAN
Bir hareketin geçmiş bir zamanda bir süre devam ettiğini belirtmek için kullanılan sürekli geçmiş zaman kipi, ing eki almış fiil ile bunun önünde to be fiilinin geçmiş zaman şekli olan was (were) kullanılarak oluşturulur.
Bu zamanın şekil bakımından şimdiki zamanla tek farkı is yerine was, are yerine were gelmesidir. Fiil her iki zamanda da aynı, yani ing almış durumdadır.
Aşağıdaki örneklerde şimdiki zaman cümleleri ile bu cümlelerdeki fiillerle yapılmış sürekli geçmiş zaman cümlelerini karşılıklı görüyoruz.

Örnek cümlelerde de görüldüğü gibi özne tekil olduğu zaman was, çoğul olduğu zaman were yardımcı fiili ing eki almış esas fiil önünde yer almaktadır.
