THE PAST PERFECT TENSE – GEÇMİŞTE BİTMİŞ ZAMAN
Geçmişte bitmiş zaman had ile fiilin üçüncü şeklinin birlikte kullanılmasıyla yapılır.
Had bütün şahıslar için aynıdır. Tekil ve çoğul olmalarıyla bir değişikliğe uğramaz.
Bu zaman şimdiki bitmiş zamanın geçmiş halidir. Nitekim aynı yapıdaki have (has) yerine onun geçmiş şekli olan had kullanılmak suretiyle meydana gelmiştir.
Geçmişte yapılmış bir eylemden önce başka bir eylemin yapılışı anlatılmak istendiğinde ilk eylem geçmişte bitmiş zaman kipiyle söylenir.
Anita had gone when Tom came. Tom geldiğinde Anita gitmişti.
Burada iki eylem vardır: Birincisi, Anita’nın gitmesi, ikincisi, Tom’un gelmesi. İlk eylem, yani Anita’nın gidişi önce, Tom’un gelmesi ondan sonra olmuştur. İkinci eylemin meydana geldiği anda bitmiş olan ilk eylem geçmişte bitmiş zamanla anlatılır.

I had finished the work when the Doktor geldiği zaman işi bitirmiştim.

Bilindiği gibi şimdiki bitmiş zaman cümlesinde eylemin oluş zamanını gösteren bir sözcük kullanmak mümkün değildir. Şayet kullanılırsa bu durum şimdiki bitmiş zamanla değil geçmiş zaman kipiyle anlatılır. Halbuki şimdiki bitmiş zamanın geçmiş şekli olan geçmişte bitmiş zaman için böyle bir durum yoktur. Onunla eylemin oluş zamanını gösteren bir sözcük kullanılabilir.
